31 Oct 2006, Halloween: Happy Halloween! We're in Oceanside, headed to San Diego tomorrow. We had a long day today, waking at 4am to make the 55 nm trip from Marina Del Rey to Oceanside in one day. We had great wind for about 4 hours, but motored for 2/3rds of the trip. We passed a school of about 100 dophins who were headed north (we're not really sure why).

We met Frank today, parked next to him actually. He owns a DE38 Ketch. We traded tours and found that our boats are almost identical except that he still has the original Ferryman engine. He says it still runs like a dream.

Act one of our travel plan (dropping the car off in San Diego) is complete. Now we're into act two, scene two, on our way to our reserved slip at the Navy Sailing Center in Point Loma to drop the boat off and pick up the car for our trip to Utah.

28 Oct 2006, Saturday: We just pulled into San Pedro and moored up at the Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club. They asked us to put up our club burgee from the Juneau Yacht Club... yeah... right... ok we'll have it up shortly!

So, after a short internet search to find out the flag is supposed to look like...

Club BurgeeSaesha demonstrates her sewing expertise....

Viola! Our club burgee is flying from the spreader!

27 Oct 2006, Friday: Pacific Corinthian Yacht Club in Oxnard was fantastic! They were super nice, the hot tub was warm, and they brought a menu out to us so we could order margaritas without getting cold. We stayed an extra day because it was so nice there.

Now we're in Marina Del Rey at the California Yacht Club. So far they're a bit snobby and won't let us use the pool... so you know.

Ok, the latest Shakespearean travel plan: Sail to San Pedro then to Newport (Oct 28,29). Pick up the car in LA, drive it down with a rental car to San Diego the drive the rental car back to the boat in San Pedro (Oct. 30). Sail down to San Diego were we have a slip reserved at Point Loma for November (Nov. 1). Pick up the car, drive to Las Vegas (Nov. 2). Drive to Utah (Nov. 4). Go to Austin (Nov. 16-27). Drive back to San Diego (Nov. 29). Head south once again (Dec. 1)

25 Oct 2006, Wednesday: We're in Oxnard at the Pacific Corinthian Yacht Club.. A very nice place so far.

Santa Barbara was great. The weather since Point Conception has been, in a word: perfect. We spent some time with Paul's grandfather, saw the town, and had some great food. Doug and Dara were there anchored next to us in 'S/V Harmony' so we went surfing yesterday morning on the breakwater with them at the Santa Barbara harbor entrance. Perfect little rolling waves, just right for a long board!

22 Oct 2006, Sunday: We just pulled into Santa Barbara and are anchored out next to Stearn's Warf.

Thanks to Lynne and Kristen for a great time at Port San Luis on Thursday and Friday, and thanks for all the veggies! We're still working on them; stuffed peppers tonight!

We rounded Point Conception on Saturday, which was fairly uneventful. We had calm weather which probably helped. Coho Anchorage was entertaining with surfers riding big waves that wrapped around the point. We didn't get great sleep though because it was a bit rolly.

Today was one of those days of sailing that leaves no doubt in our minds as to why we are doing this. I'll let the pictures do the talking all taken today...

17 Oct 2006, Tuesday: We enjoyed a tour of Hearst Castle today, and learned how to swamp a dingy! Our first surf landing left something to be desired. The good news is that our cell phone is alive again. After the dingy landing gave it and our camera a salt water wash we rinsed them in some purified water we keep around for the batteries. It's a little unnerving to dump water into (yes, we opened it up and dumped water into) a piece of electronic equipment, but hey, it worked!

16 Oct 2006, Monday: We got an early start: 3am! for the 78nm to San Simeon. The trip started off... well... dark. As predicted the sun rose, albiet behind some clouds. Later in the day a tailwind picked up, 5 knots, 10 knots, sails up, 15 knots, 20 knots... 25 knots... weeeeeee! Luckily it was all downwind, down swell.

There was an awsome full rainbow for a bit, and we were able to stay out of the rain for the most part.

Now we're anchored in San Simeon in the shadow of Hearst Castle! We'll grab a tour tomorrow.

15 Oct 2006, Sunday: The last few days have been great. We hit Half Moon Bay (great protected anchorage at Pillar Point inside a breakwall), Santa Cruz (a bit rolly, but not too bad), and then Montery (the anchorage was terribly rolly, but the harbor was nice). While in Half Moon Bay we met up with Hope who informed us that Half Moon Bay is a town not actually in Half Moon Bay! It was nice to see Hope though, and we hit a fantastic restaurant.

We're sitting on the hook off the famous Pebble Beach golf course surrounded by multi-million dollar houses.

Very posh. Stillwater Cove is a nice anchorage, not nearly as bouncy as the night we spent anchored outside the breakwater in Monterey!

It was great to see Shelly and Mike; we had a mini Purdue Outing Club reunion.

They gave us a tour of Monterey equal to none we have ever had, then took us to a restaurant called Jose's where the four of us left absolutely stuffed with excellent mexican food for $12 (total!). They then took us to a grocery store and their favorite laundromat! They then accepted and invitation to sail around to Stillwater Cove (12 nm) with us (hopefully they will forgive us, don't be fooled by the smiles on their faces!)

Tommorrow at 3am it's off to San Simeon, 78 nm away. That will be a looooooong day. The weather looks ok though at least for a day, and from what we've read San Simeon is a decent anchorage.

10 Oct 2006, Tuesday: So we're going to try something new here. The Windows Local Live thing was neat, but it sounds like it's causing everyone problems. I think we put a few to many points on the map. Anyway, this is a blog instead. We'll try and keep it updated (yeah right). Chicken in Half Moon Bay

Thanks to Moni, Brad, Uncle Jon, Elliot, Doug, and Dara for a great time in SF!

We're in Half Moon Bay now! We left San Fran yesterday afternoon with a predicted 10-20 NW wind, which turned out to be 20 from the south, go figure. So we motor-sailed!
